The three marks of a modern hallmark
| Mark | Example | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| BIS logo | Triangle | Tested at a BIS-recognised hallmarking centre |
| Purity grade | 22K916, 18K750, 14K585 | Karat and gold parts per thousand |
| HUID | 6 letters/numbers, e.g. AB12C3 | Unique ID for that specific piece |
How to verify a HUID
- Install the official BIS CARE app.
- Choose "Verify HUID" and enter the 6-character code.
- The app shows the jeweller, purity, type of article and hallmarking centre.
Old 4-mark hallmarks
Jewellery hallmarked before the HUID system usually has four marks: BIS logo, purity, the hallmarking centre's mark and the jeweller's mark, sometimes with a year letter. These remain valid for you to own and sell; they simply cannot be verified online.
No hallmark at all?
Most gold bought before hallmarking became mandatory has no hallmark. It is still gold and still sellable — the purity is simply measured, which is what our Purity test does at your home.
Does a hallmark guarantee the price?
It confirms the stated purity at the time of hallmarking. Repairs, soldering or added parts can change the overall purity slightly, which is why buyers still test before paying.
